Bitcoin Energy Consumption Index Changes

Added sustainability indicators for water consumption and included background information for these indicators in the main body text. Updated minimum energy consumption benchmark to Bitmain’s Antminer S21.

Assumption on manufacturing lead times fixed at a one year period (previously variable but hovering around one year). No retroactive calculation was performed due to limited impact.

Ethereum Energy Consumption Index Changes

V2.0.0 – September 15, 2022

Estimation method changed to reflect a new estimate for proof-of-stake Ethereum after “The Merge” (i.e. Ethereum replacing its proof-of-work mechanism with proof-of-stake).

V1.1.0 – May 29, 2022

Retroactively applied a fix to allow electricity costs to reach 100% of miner revenues during a market downturn (previously capped at 60%). Additionally, a fix was applied to properly account for fees after the implementation of EIP-1559.
